In 2007, CFI piloted a program designed to address Athen’s County most immediate food security issue: access to healthy fresh foods for all. This initial piloting program was such a success with support from local farmers, that the Donation Station program was born into CFI.
The Donation Station receives both food and monetary donations each week at the Athens Farmers Market and Chesterhill Produce Auction from customers, vendors and local community gardeners. The monetary donations are used to purchase fresh foods from the market and auction vendors. See below for information on how you can help.
All of the food collected is distributed weekly to local food pantries and social service agencies. In 2015, 86,991 pounds of produce and local food products have been distributed to food pantries and agencies in Athens, Morgan and Vinton Counties!
How can you help the Donation Station reach its goal of making fresh, healthy, local produce available to everyone?
Donate extra produce items or spare change for us to make purchases at the market or auction:
- Visit us year round every Saturday from 9am-12pm at the Athens Farmers Market! We are also at the AFM every Wednesday from 9am-12pm from April to December.
- Visit us at the Chesterhill Produce Auction, which takes place every Monday and Thursday beginning at 4pm from May to October.
Volunteer with us:
- For a one-time or short-term volunteer opportunity, contact email@example.com to help out with Harvest Hotline or bulk food bagging events.
- If you’re looking to get more deeply involved, email firstname.lastname@example.org to learn how you can work with us at the Athens Farmers Market, Chesterhill Produce Auction, or food distributions.

Discovery Kitchen offers healthy cooking classes to food pantry patrons and agency clients using local seasonal ingredients. CFI finds that people build confidence in increasing their fresh produce consumption if they have a little help and encouragement, so Discovery Kitchen offers just that–easy how-to’s, recipes, and tasty samples to help inspire increased confidence in the kitchen!
