The CFI Donation Station addresses Athens County’s most immediate food security issue – access for all to fresh, healthy foods. We receive both food and monetary donations from customers at the Athens Farmers Market each week (twice a week between April and October). We use these cash donations to purchase fresh, local and healthy goods sold by the market’s farmers and food producers.
We also receive food and produce donations from the market’s vendors, people with plots in CFI community gardens, and those with home gardens. We solicit cash donations within our region during the spring through fall months to purchase additional fresh food from the Chesterhill Produce Auction, an initiative of Rural Action. These foods are distributed weekly to over 35 locations in Athens County, including food pantries and social service agencies, after-school enrichment programs, USDA Summer Feeding sites, and families and individuals in need. In 2010, the Donation Station supplied 21 tons of fresh produce and other foods to the above groups. We are on track to meet our projected goal to double this amount in 2011.
If you are in need of food, contact us by calling 740.593.5971 or email us at cfi@frognet.net
